JW's 2011 blog!

Hey all!

It's my turn to blog :)
Lots has been going on in the ML camp and we have been working really hard behind the scenes to get our music to industry - with great feedback I must tell you!
In the last 3 months, I've sat in more swanky west London offices than Alan Sugar, shared coffee with industry bigwigs and chewed the fat about some of the most exciting ideas since Thomas Edison invented the self lubricating jockstrap.
We've been on the radio, won a place in an 'Indie artist of the year' award with Somojo magazine and have been recording some new tracks too - How it Ends, which is a favourite at our live shows and Wake Up which is very much the future of our sound.
This year, we are getting out there again and will be touring in the spring so keep an eye out for some dates - we'd love to see you at one of our shows!

We have also reached the regional finals of a competition called 'Live and Unsigned' which is a national music showcase, which is exciting!

We have come so far with your support and for 2011, we are going to see just how far this can go...

In the meantime -

I get asked a lot about my guitar rig so I thought I'd 'blog on' about it too... BEWARE - GEEK ALERT!

I recently changed my main guitar from a Taylor Solid Body to my beloved Gibson Les Paul Custom Classic.
This is a hell of a guitar, I can tell you and with those '57 classic pickups, it really sings with a lovely vintage tone.
I still use the Taylor, but prefer to keep the changes to a minimum on stage.

I am an endorsee of Rotosound strings and have no hesitation in stringing all my guitars with them - check them out!!
www.rotosound.co.uk

A good cable makes a big difference - think about it - the signal from the guitar runs through the cable to the amp, right?
Why spend ££££'s on a guiar and amp then put it through a £5.00 piece of copper??
A chap called Pete Cornish who makes equipment for the likes of David Gilmour and Brian May graced me with the honour of making me one of his special cables and I will say - you can tell!! Thanks Pete!!

This runs to my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Limited Edition 'White Lightning' which has a great smooth overdrive.
If I want to ramp it up a little, I'll use my Marshall JMP1 preamp, which bypasses the preamp on the Fender and just goes through the power amp stage - it sounds BIG!!

Delay is a big feature for my ML sound so I mix in a TC Electronics G Major. This baby has some GREAT modulations and reverbs too and has true bypass, meaning that when it's 'off' it's 'off' and not still affecting the pure tone.
The TC has a remote switch feature too so it controls my Fender amp and as it's MIDI controlled it's perfect to use with my Tech 21 Midi Moose footboard. No tangled leads or pedals at the front of the stage, just one 5 switch box. Tidy :)

All of this wouldn't be possible without my RJM 'Effects Gizmo' - which is a MIDI switchable loop unit. With one push of a button I can select ANY sound I like - A clean Fender tone with chorus or a full on Marshall scream with tons of FX!!
I'm proud to be an endorsee of RJM too and can totally recommend their products for any serious musician.

If you are a geek like me and we happen to meet, feel free to speak to me in 'geek tongue'.

See you later,

Christmas fun...

Hi,

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, I promise that we've not been slacking!

At the moment, the boys and I are in the final run-up to the big Christmas party gig at the Clapham Grand this Friday. Stephen has played here before in the old ML line-up as well as with his old band Aravena & the venue has had a massive overhaul so it should be an awesome night. I sat in on rehearsal on Monday and had a good listen to the new set list (which sounds amazing – including a brand new song!) as well as sorting out a few things for the freebie we will be giving away if you make it to the gig!

Tickets are available now if you click here

Don't forget, if you get there before 8.30pm then you get a free shot! There is also a club which I believe is open until 3am, so no excuse to not have a good night and enjoy the party.

Hopefully some of you tuned into either GatewayFM or Totalrock Radio over the last couple of days and heard the boys' interview. On Sunday we even had the treat of a few live acoustic numbers, so good work if you got to hear those.

As ever, there will be a bunch of merchandise available on Friday... t-shirts, posters, CDs and badges (we even give those away for free) so make sure you stock up and the boys will be around after the show to sign anything you want signing...

Can't wait to see you there! Going to be a good one.

Murphys Law and Social Media....

Apologies for long time no speak on the ML Blog front. We have been busy gigging and rehearsing as per usual. The four of us have been in the recording studio briefly with a producer\engineer type chap called Pierre. We met Pierre when he engineered the sound for Stephens solo show at the Archangel in Kensington, London early this year.

A recent gig at the Cobden Club saw us showcase for the Broadcast Music, Inc. The BMI is one of three United States performing rights organisations, along with ASCAP and SESAC. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed. Good people to know and we think they were suitably impressed.

Last week Myself and Stephen attended an APRA (google it) workshop where the legendary Ralph Murphy presented his extraordinarily insightful "Murphy's Laws of Song writing." Canadian, English and American songwriter Ralph Murphy has achieved near-legendary status throughout his career as a performer, producer, songwriter, publisher, and most recently, Vice President, International and Domestic Membership, ASCAP.

Ralph travels all over the world giving songwriters the benefit of his years of experience in the business. Over the last three decades Ralph has written a whole songbook of hits including: "Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt" for Billy Fury, another No 1 for Crystal Gayle with "Half the Way" and "He Got You" was a big one for Ronnie Milsap. Plus cuts by Don Williams, Ray Price, Shania Twain and Kathy Mattea and then in 2006 he had a huge holiday hit in England with Cliff Richard.

Murphy's Laws of Song writing is published to inform writers of the general rules that almost all #1 hits follow and to offer industry advice. You can find out a bit more about it here at http://murphyslawsofsongwriting.com. Ralph was a very entertaining man and gave She Dancer the once over.......he was pretty positive....which was nice.

We have recently dedicated much of our time to improving the bands internet and social media presence. Although we'd rather be playing the music we understand you can never under estimate this vital component, so I thought perhaps I'd write a little about this in here.

So why is Social Media so important to Morning Lane and our brand .....?

Nowadays if you want to be a successful band or artist, not only do you have to have the songs and live performance, you must also have a web site and MySpace up and running. The internet bridges the gap between listener, prospective promoter, manager, record company etc. where as in the past it was a case of mailing out numerous CDs, Cassettes (back in the day) and mini-disks to everyone and anyone. These would usually probably have gone in a bin somewhere and never actually opened or listened to. Bands can now save money via the internet, by emailing links to MySpace for example.

However it is not only these internet media outlets that service the industry. Over the last few years the use of micro blogging sites and Facebook have transformed the way bands market themselves. As a fan, you can get closer to your favourite band and as an up and coming band or artist, it is essential to keep up with everything other bands are doing also. We make use of Twitter and Facebook as best we can and it is a nice and cost effective way of staying in touch with everyone. Why not visit www.morning-lane.com and see our links page if you want to get involved or share our stuff with anyone.

Morning Lane needs advocates to spread the word, so there is nothing better than social media for recommendations and share ability. It's quick easy and accessible in this age of technology and a constant stream of communication with fans is important to keep everyone focused on what we are doing.

Anyway sorry to go on......I need to go now, it's rehearsal soon. We are trying to have a crack at refurbing some old, old songs, that are too good to throw away. You never know, they may be aired at gigs before the year is out. We have potential dates soon at The Barfly, Clapham Grand and perhaps The Scala, so fingers crossed they all get confirmed. Speak soon and here are some more lyrics for you to have a read through.

Laterz

Mourn - available on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/just-so-you-know/id359974775

When you learn that dreaming only gets you nowhere fast
You can sell your soul and move on with your life

If you feel there’s no beginning and no ending
You just need to stop and catch your breath
Before you fall apart

Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn
Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn

When you feel like running round in circles
With your fingers buried deep inside your ears

It’s the things you don’t expect, you don’t prepare for
You don’t see them coming round the bend
Until it’s much too late

Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn
Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn

I’ve wasted too much time
Thinking how we lost our innocence
I don’t think I will survive
While I’m alive

When you feel that fortune always favours braveless men
And tomorrow brings no guarantee of hope

Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn
Now’s the time to cry
Now’s our chance to mourn

Well hello everyone!

After a whirlwind of a few weeks leading up to the show at the Indigo2 at the O2 in Greenwich, we have had a short relaxing break to recharge the batteries. I am happy to report that the batteries are well and truly charged and we are raring to go! We are back in the studio recording the next wave of tasty tunes and they are sounding great! As soon as they are done, we will upload them for you guys to hear them.

In case you are interested - JW has new boots, Tristan bought a new bit of technical equipment for our samples/monitoring system. Ross is like a small child at Christmas time with the acquisition of a new, expensive set of ear moulds, which will mean that he should be singing more and more! is that good? Hmmm..... And me, well, I am thinking of buying an electric guitar after enjoying the experience at the last show. Not sure if that is a good idea either to be honest.

Anyway, we have loads of exciting things on the horizon, which we promise to let you know about as soon as they come to fruition; they include an appearance on a national BBC radio show, a few more shows in some of the better venues in London as well as the new songs coming out of the studio.

Hopefully lots more to come very soon.....

Love Stephen x

Here are some more lyrics for you to check out:

SHADOWS OF YOU:

Taken from the Just So You Know EP (available on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/just-so-you-know/id359974775)

My love, I’m no dreamer
But I would do things I’ve never done before to reach you

Reasons. Who needs a reason?
To try to understand the things we have to overcome

Then you lift me over your shoulder
High above all the things I fear
Till they disappear, disappear

Living in shadows of you
Hoping today reminds you
This is who I am
This is where I stand

Why don’t you understand?
That I’ve got to believe in something other than myself

Then you lift me over your shoulder
High above all the things I fear
Till they disappear, disappear

Living in shadows of you
Hoping today reminds you
This is who I am
This is where I stand

When again you’re left behind
And you know its all the same old reasons why…

Living in shadows of you
Hoping today reminds you
This is who I am
This is where I stand

Living in shadows of you
Hoping today reminds you
This is who I am
This is where I stand

Well didn't we all have a great time at the Indigo2 Arena!

Just as much as the build up to the gig, the show itself and afterwards were just as we thought.......and more.

We were fortunate to headline the night, so we had a good sound check which always helps, and then the crowd started pouring in; all in good spirits and enjoying all the bars and restaurants that the o2 has to offer.

We started off the set with The Child I Am and we had an amazing reception throughout, especially when we introduced Karolina on the cello for She Dancer and Wake Up.

The crowd just wanted more when we finished our set, so we went back on and played another couple, finishing with everyone bopping around to Faith.

Afterwards................that's another story!

Until next time

The week building up to the O2...

Morning everybody!

Just thought I'd fill you in on what's happening in ML camp!

We are gearing up for the O2 on Friday and there's so much to do!
We have the technical bits to finish off and also Tristan's new In Ear Monitoring system to fathom out. Stephen is dithering between a million guitars to use and I have been using a Silverburst Gibson Les Paul custom classic for the last two weeks, which I have fallen in love with and now I'm not sure whether to use it or not for the O2... ?
WHAT A DILEMMA!!
She's a real beauty and very different to my usual guitar, the Taylor Solid Body.

We have rehearsals, written interviews, photo shoots - and last week we won the WOHO music 'track of the month' competition with our forthcoming single 'She Dancer' so they would like to do a video interview and follow our lead up to the gig and feature us for the whole of August!
On Wednesday, Stephen is travelling around doing acoustic slots and interviews for the radio stations and we have been meeting some very important people from the industry!
Cool.

We've been working extra, extra hard and feel ready to take on the O2 and we can't wait to get on that big stage and rock out!

However, one thing is still bugging me...
Do I use the Les Paul or the Taylor...?

Hey... So as this blog should be going live tomorrow, I thought it would be good to give you something more to read!

I've been away for a few weeks, so I've been getting up to speed with the boys and seeing how things are getting on before we head to the Indigo2 in just two weeks time... I'm currently sat at rehearsal and (after sitting through two hours of technical geekiness which I really don't understand, but am sure is all very important...) can confirm that the set is sounding awesome! It's come on loads since I was last here, seems like they have been REALLY hard at work while I've been gone! Or maybe I've just missed them :-) Either way I can't wait for everyone to hear it...! It's so nice to hear a live cellist in the mix too...

So, there's been loads of stuff going on behind the scenes... a lot of which I can't talk about just yet, but I can tell you we're going to be doing a new photo shoot this weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for some sexy new shots of the boys...

Tickets are going fast for the Indigo2 gig, so make sure you head over to the gigs page of our website and snap them up... It's going to be a great night and we will be filming the day so there will be some 'behind the scenes' video coming out not too long after..

See you at the gig! I'll be the one with the camera :-)

The She Dancer Video Shoot and some lyrics...

Hi there,

Firstly welcome to the new Morning Lane blog. During these posts, Morning Lane and our team, will hopefully provide readers with a closer look at the band.

Over the last couple of weeks we have been busy rehearsing as usual and fine tuning our set for the O2 gig in August. We have also implemented some new gadgets and monitoring. John or Ross can go into in a later blog as they love all that stuff.

Recently we found a great musician called Carolina Borkowska, who has joined us for some rehearsals. Her cello playing is brilliant and should be a great compliment to some of our songs. So fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed, she will be up to speed come the O2 on August 6th. We are sure she will, so come and see for yourself.

In addition we have filmed a video for the She Dancer single release. The actual release date is yet to be confirmed. However we will be giving away a free download of the track on the 6th August at the O2 to anyone who comes down to show their support. So keep an eye on our website for details.

This brings me on to the video shoot. This was filmed by Aaron and Sam, who we only met recently. Hannah (ML staff\photographer\designer) made the introductions; Aaron saw us at 93 Feet East on Brick Lane and was very keen. We all got on like a house on fire and got down to a packed filming schedule.

The venue for the shoot was The Bedford in Balham where Stephen has played his acoustic solo shows before and thought the setting would be ideal. He was not wrong! "This extraordinary space shaped like a Shakespearean globe" writes their website, used to be home to an 18th Century courtroom. So providing Aaron and Sam have done their bit and we did ours, it should look great! See this website for further info. on the venue http://www.thebedford.co.uk/

Aaron has a show reel here http://www.youtube.com/pilot46. As you can imagine we are really looking forward to seeing the finished article. We will be posting up the results on our You Tube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/MorningLane and our website so keep checking the links over the next few weeks.

Now lyric time! This seems to be the done thing on blogs these days so here goes! See below for the She Dancer lyrics......... Sorry if I waffled. See you next time.

Title: She Dancer

To meet somebody like you
A chance so unexpected here
To fall for you with all I am
Leaves me feeling insecure
An encounter to remember
Take a chance

She Dancer she may be the love of my life
And all I really know is her name
She smiles and she makes me believe her again
Nothing in this world can compare
And I can pretend that she’ll love me again
She Dancer she may be the love of my life

I’ll wait for you with open arms
Wait for you to come my way
Whenever I’m feeling alone
I’ll think of all the plans we made
And make believe that you never went away

She Dancer she may be the love of my life
And all I really know is her name
She smiles and she makes me believe her again
Nothing in this world can compare
And I can pretend that she’ll love me again
She Dancer she may be the love of my life

All I can do is watch you leaving me
And all I have is what you leave me with
A glimpse of love, golden memory
Now the sky is all bruised
And its love we must choose
When there’s so much to lose
There’s always much to gain
Do you believe in love?
Do you believe in love?

To meet somebody like you
